James Vernon (Moon) Miller. I use the surname of Moon because of course, that is the name our grandfather James (Jim) Vernon was born with and it just sounds way kooler than Miller! But unfortunate circumstances led to a name change from Moon to Miller and the rest is family history.

Edwin Moon |
Edwin Moon at an unknown age but my guess it that it may be close to his second marriage, yes second marriage, the marriage to our great grandmother Mary Susan Bowen. First here is a little history that I was able to find about Edwin's first marriage. Marriage. Edwin first married Margaret Hammer Woods, daughter of David Hammer and Cassandra Jacoby. Margaret Hammer was born about 1839 in Pennsylvania and died March 1890 at about the age of 29 in Glenwood, Mills County Iowa. Margaret's marriage to Edwin Moon was her second and as far as I have been able to determine it was his first. The 1870 United States Census for Glenwood Iowa lists Edwin Moon age 30 (this would make his date of birth about 1840 which coincides with other known facts about his age), occupation as Saloon Keeper, with wife Margaret, occupation keeping house, and Charles age 9 with a medical note of deaf and dumb. The 1880 United States Census for Glenwood Iowa lists Edwin Moon, age 39, with wife Margaret, age 41, with son Curt Dawson, age 28, son Charles Wood age 17, daughter Carrie Moon age 5 and E.R. Moon male age 1. The Notice of Death for Edwin Moon appeared in the Mills County Iowa Tribune April 7, 1905 at page 4. In the death notice Curt Dawson is listed as a stepson and Carrie Roman as an adopted daughter. It is not know if Carrie Roman is the same Carrie Moon noted in the 1880 Census. Marriage to Mary Susan Bowen. At the time of their marriage in Glenwood Mills County Iowa on June 2, 1892, Mary was 18 years of age and Edwin was 52 years of age. The record of the marriage between Edwin and Mary was located on rootsweb.com and was recorded at Iowa Mills County Marriage 1886-99 Bk6 Page 29. A written request for a marriage record was sent to the State of Iowa Department of Public Health but no record could be located. Records this far back can be difficult to find and in most cases will not be found at all. It appears a visit to Iowa will need to be done in order to further search out this record. Death. Edwin died April 5, 1905. Cause of death is listed as Pulmonary Abscess with Senility and Heart Weakness as contributory causes. A copy of the Mills County Iowa Tribune Notice of Death can be viewed in the Documents Page.
